Darline Graham Nordone, a Certified Optician, Appointed to the U.S. Senate
Darline Graham Nordone, a certified optician from South Carolina, has been appointed to the United States Senate, filling the seat vacated by her brother Sen. Lindsey Graham’s death in July. She is the first optician to serve in Congress, joining Senators Rand Paul (ophthalmologist) and John Boozman (optometrist). Nordone will use the name "Graham" during her term, which runs through January 3, 2027. Previously head of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind, she is also the first woman to represent South Carolina in the Senate. The United Opticians Association views this appointment as a significant opportunity for professional advocacy, noting that opticians have historically lacked visibility in federal policy discussions regarding education standards and patient safety.
