Maat Optical CEO Li Jun details photochromic lens innovations and thermal stability challenges
Beyond darkening – the future of photochromic lenses
In a MAFO magazine interview, Li Jun, founder and CEO of Maat Optical, discussed the company’s strategy for photochromic lenses. Founded in China in 2000, Maat Optical produces over 20 million lenses annually with nearly 400 employees, including more than 30 in R&D. The company utilizes in-mass and spin-coating technologies to compete with international brands. Li highlighted recent additions of red and amber colors in the first half of 2026 and an annual pipeline of over three new products guided by their "8Q Strategy." He identified balancing thermal stability with photosensitivity as the primary technical challenge, noting that high temperatures limit darkening performance. Based in Danyang, a major ophthalmic manufacturing hub, Maat Optical aims to enhance light management and visual health protection globally.
